Our speakers

Mr. Joan VALADOU was appointed Consul General of France in Shanghai by decree of the President of the Republic since May 2022. He is a Chinese speaking career diplomat and who joined the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in 2007. Before joining Shanghai, he was director of the Human Development Department in Paris and in this capacity covered international issues related to health, education, gender equality and food security within the Directorate-General for Globalization, Culture, Education, and International Development.  Previously, he worked on global health issues as desk officer in charge of Unitaid (2007-2009) and on Franco-Chinese relations (2009-2011) at the Ministry, before joining the French Embassy in China as First Secretary (2011-2015) and then the French Embassy in Japan as Press and Communication Counsellor (2015-2019). 

He is a graduate of the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris and of INALCO (Chinese language and civilization) and studied in Beijing at Renmin University and Tsinghua University.

 

Mr. Hervé Machenaud is the former CEO of the Asia Pacific division of EDF, and a former member of the Executive Committee of EDF Group.

With 35 years operational experience within EDF, his career is distinguished by his pioneering role in the development of EDF in China. He joined EDF Group in 1982 as Assistant Director of Development at the Paluel Nuclear Plant. From 1984 to 1989, he took charge of the nuclear technology expansion into China, in particular the construction and commissioning of the Daya Bay Nuclear plant. From 1990 to 2002, he served as EDF’s Director of the National Nuclear Infrastructure Centre, Assistant Director of Infrastructure, Head of Generation and Transmission, and then Deputy Chief Operating Officer of the Industry Branch. From 2002 to 2009, he served as President of EDF Asia Branch with the responsibility to enhance EDF Group industrial expertise, particularly nuclear, and to ensure EDF access to technological innovations in China, Japan, India and in the Great Mekong region. From 2010 to 2016, he was EDF Group’s Senior Executive Vice President for Generation and Engineering and became a member of EDF’s executive committee.

Today, he is President of Hongma Consulting Service (Beijing) Co., Ltd., and chairs Polytechnique Insights Chinese edition. Author of the book La France dans le noir, published in 2017, with an expanded new publication in 2022, reflecting on the European and French energy policy. Mr. Machenaud holds degrees from Ecole Polytechnique, Ecole Nationale des Ponts & Chaussée and Sciences Po Paris.

 

Mr. Nicolas POIROT started his journey with Air Liquide in 1995, and had increasing responsibilities in the following 10 years, holding positions from Sales & Marketing Director in Indonesia to Southeast Asia regional role and Country Manager of Vietnam. From 2012 to 2016, Nicolas was responsible for Air Liquide Group performance, strategic planning, and investment. Before taking the position of President & CEO Greater China, he was Vice President of Air Liquide South West Europe and had leadership in overseeing 150 sites in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. 

Nicolas holds a MSc Chem Engineering degree from Ecole des Mines de Paris, and took advanced Management Programmes in London Business School and Singapore Nanyang Technological University. He is also Chairman of Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM) Board, a French economic trade advisor (CCEF), and board advisor of CAB CEIBS. In 2022, he was honored with Shanghai Magnolia Silver Award.

 

Frank Yu Global Vice President of Envision Energy and head of Envision Hydrogen. He was appointed to be the Global Vice President of Power to X business in Envision Group. He is accountable for the business of zero carbon gas and hydrogen energy, and will collaborate with other divisions in the group such as Envision Energy, AESC and Envision Digital to provide the value and business chance to customers, industry park and government.

Before joining in Envision, Frank Yu has been worked for Air Products for many years as vice president of China and was the General Manager of Central and Eastern China and also General Manager of Hydrogen Energy Business.  Before Air Products, Frank Yu was the machinery and mechanic design engineer in a state-owned company. He owns the bachelor degree of Chemical Equipment and Machinery in Nanjing Chemical University and the MBA degree of Maastricht School of Management held by International Business School of Nanjing University. 

 

Mr. Kevin Tu is the Managing Director of Agora Energy Transition China, he is also an adjunct professor at the School of Environment of Beijing Normal University, and a non-resident fellow at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University, Institut français des relations internationals (Ifri) and the Institute of Energy at Peking University. 

Prior to his affiliation with Agora, Tu had served various key positions including China program manager at Paris-based International Energy Agency, director of China Energy & Climate Program at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC., partner at a Vancouver-based premier energy consulting firm, director of marine operations at China’s largest LPG importer and distributor, and construction project manager at Sinopec, a Chinese national oil company.

Tu has more than two decades of solid experience in the energy and environmental fields as well as government affairs in Asia Pacific, North America and Europe, his research interests cover the full spectrum of energy issues including fossil fuel value chains, energy transitions, energy sector reforms, climate change, and corporate strategy & transformation, with a focus on EU-China relations and U.S.-China relations, and their implications for China’s energy & climate policies.

 

Mr. Fulvio BARTOLUCCI has nearly 20 years experience in developing sustainable energy solutions across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Active in Asia’s renewables industry since 2007, Fulvio focuses on low-carbon, renewable and energy efficiency projects. Before managing Adenergy and Tera, Fulvio was Director for several green energy and carbon reduction companies in China: Azure International, Ecofys/OneCarbon, Orbeo. He then piloted the sustainable energy transition project in the APAC region for Rhodia/Solvay group. Besides, Fulvio is active in Asia’s smart building and smart city related business.
