UK politics - Mayoring up: Labour tackling regional inequalities
The new UK Labour government aims to tackle Britain’s economic growth problem and achieve the “highest growth rate in the G7”, while reducing territorial inequalities, echoing the previous Conservative “levelling up” agenda. Regional mayors – overseeing England's 12 largest metropolitan areas – are central to these goals. Although “local growth plans” are underway, Westminster is still solidifying this approach. A recent White paper outlines ideas on housing, skills, investment, and devolution, but detailed long-term spending plans are expected by June 2025. We ask Pr. Diane Coyle, Bennett Professor of Public Policy at the University of Cambridge, where the problems lie.
